Nigerian Actor, Lawyer, and former spokes person for the Labour Party, Kenneth Okonkwo has described opposition party’s in Nigeria as weak due to a combination of structural, political and economic factors which has culminated in not focusing on how to challenge policies and actions of government which may affect the interest of the people.

The former Labour Party spokes person who stated this while featuring on a TV programme today mentioned that, most Nigerian political parties most especially opposition parties are not built on strong ideological principles but rather are often revolved around personalities and political ambitions rather than clear policies of national interest.
While reacting to the Labour party’s role as an opposition party, Okonkwo noted that a party that is not together and is in disarray can never perform the full functions of an opposition. If and when the party is united then the party will be able to perfom optimally as an opposition to challenge government policies and actions.
He also identified defection, lack of loyalty and financial constraints, leadership tussles and lack of a strong internal democracy as some of the reasons for the weakness of opposition parties as this prevents the opposition parties from building long tern structures that can challenge government policies.
While speaking on the state of security in the country, Okonkwo noted that the security situation in the country is as a result of a failed system saying the Federal Government should be held accountable for the state of insecurity in the country. He called on the Federal government who does not have the capacity to protect every citizen of the country to as a matter of urgency put in place state policing that will help to secure lives and properties.
Okonkwo emphasised that the Nigerian security architecture is undermanned and underequiped for a country with over two hundred million people and having state police and even community policing in place is very critical at this time when the country is under heavy attack by bandits and kidnappers.
He commended the Governors of the south west region who came up with the initiative of the Amotekun , a security outfit which has proven itself to be a force to be reckoned with in the region for protecting lives and properties and urged other Governors in other regions to follow that template to compliment the efforts of the Nigerian Police in providing adequate security for their citizens. He also called on the Federal Government to invest heavily in the security of the country to be able to attract more foreign investors to the country.
